This section covers conditional phrases and reported speech. Conditionals are \"if-then\" statements composed of two parts, the first giving a hypothetical event and the second giving the result of the first event. Conditionals are regularly in one of four forms, depending on the tense of each part, although the forms can be mixed. Reported speech occurs when someone is \"reporting\" on speech they heard directly. The one making the reported speech is referencing back to the direct speaker, so instances of the present tense in direct speech shift to past tense in the reported speech.
