Receptive and productive language skills while inextricably intertwined are not in fact the same thing at all. This was made quite apparent during my time in a special needs classroom. I would have kids who could read and listen (bilingually often) but were unable to produce speech. In my own studies of a foreign language, I found it much easier to read and understand, than to listen and understand. This previous knowledge in conjunction with this unit highlights the importance of focusing on each skill individually, as well as all of the skills as a whole. It would seem a successful lesson will incorporate specific skill practice, as well as broader more integrated practice utilizing all the skills.
