Understanding how to effectively evaluate students is an important part of teaching. This can be achieved by conducting specific assessments of students at key times of their study. For example, placement tests are commonly used prior to commencement of study to assist grouping students based on similarity of skills. Progress tests are routinely used to assess students understanding of specific topics over time and level of knowledge retention. Diagnostic tests, similar to placement tests, aim to identify areas of study in which students find difficulties to begin with. Finally, external tests commonly prepare students for external tests by following a similar format to the test being taken in the future.
