The productive skills, speaking and writing, are equally as important as the receptive skills. Speaking and writing each have different purposes as well as differing focuses. For many when learning a new language, speaking can be very difficult to practice and develop fluency as one needs to have a certain level of understanding of grammar and vocabulary to begin speaking. At the same time, this skill can be easier than writing, especially if a student is coming from a language that has a completely different writing system to English. With both skills, it is important to plan activities and lessons that will balance fluency and accuracy practice, as well as balancing controlled and more creative tasks/activities.
