Unit 13 centered on the understanding and teaching of pronunciation. As linguistics and the human speech are complex areas, the teaching of pronunciation should be deliberate and thoughtfully executed. In this lesson there was focus on the speech organs, which include the tongue, larynx, glottis, alveolar ridge, hard palate, and soft palate. Each of these places connect to the production of a phoneme, referred to as the “place of articulation.†The manner of articulation is also connected to the production of phonemes. One such example is the difference between the production of /b/ and /m/. While they are both bilabial sounds, the manner that they are produced differs (/b/ is plosive, and /m/ is nasal).
