In this unit I learned that there are three major branches when it comes to teaching English: Vocabulary, grammar, and language functions. They go hand and hand with each other, and a teaching curriculum should be balanced so that all three branches are addressed in a level and appropriate fashion. Considerations of teaching vocabulary should include the meaning of the word, its frequency, and its relation to other words the student may be familiar with. While when teaching grammar, the teacher must ensure the students understand the form and correct usage of the constructions, as well as the situations such grammar may be appropriate. Lastly, language functions are often best taught using a patchwork ESA approach.
