Lesson plans can come in variety of forms and vary based on the skill of the teacher, the level of the class, what the goals are, and other variables. It's best to not be too rigid when adhering to a lesson plan while still using the plan to steer the class in the right direction. The newer a teacher is, the more they will probably need to rely on lesson plans to make sure they hit all the salient points they need to in order to ensure the students are presented the right material and are able to comprehend that material to the best of their ability. Lesson plans are a great opportunity for a teacher to help create the kind of classroom environment they want to foster -- serious or fun, relaxed or studious, etc.
