Giving your student time to interact with other student can help them feel that they belong to the class hearing their ideas and giving them time to talk. Using students name and knowing your students can give them encouragement to join and participate the class activity. To gain respect from the class you should always be punctual and ready for your lesson, being hilarious sometime can soften the class and make them a little relax.
