Some textbook materials provide decent progress tests at the end of each chapter. However, one problem I faced is that most textbook curriculums don't really have placement tests (at least I haven't come across one yet), and whenever there'd be a new student, I used a general placement test, in conjunction with an oral test, to 'manually' determine which group the student should belong to. As for external exams, many young people who have plans to work or study in an English speaking country choose (or are obliged) to take IELTS. I had a few students who needed specific preparation for that exam. And the preparation I conducted included not only practice tests, but also reading, speaking and other necessary practices.
