The intonation of English shows the stress and meanings behind sentences. Depending on how a sentence is finished with a rising or falling tone indicates whether no not the speaker is done speaking, and if the speaker wants a response or not. Also, looking at the phonology of English, we can see that English has become a language that is not entirely phonetic anymore, and due to this, being able to use the international phonetic alphabet is helpful when teaching students what sounds the English roman letters can make. These parts of English can be hard to teach, but should be taught. If you think it is hard to teach, then try to imagine how hard it is for the students to learn these finer parts of the English language.
