Unit 13 presents the topic on how to teach pronunciation and phonology. The two most common intonation patterns are discussed--rising-falling and rising. Various rules on word stress are explained. Techniques for teaching stress are conveyed, such as, contrastive stress, using gestures, choral work, using the board by underlining or drawing boxes on top of a word, and stress marks. Furthermore, phonemic symbols used in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) are presented. The IPA serves as a guide among teachers and students to be able to pronounce words correctly. Finally, the manners and place of articulation are discussed in details. Both are very useful among students learning English pronunciation and phonology.
