This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
The teacher must always be aware of, and concerned with, the needs of her class. So, when she is given a coursebook to use, she needs to consider its usefulness in relation to those needs. The more relevant to the lives of the students the material used is, the more likely are students to become interested and involved in the lesson. it is then the teacher's responsibility to make the lesson relevant to the students' experiences - their culture, their age, their specific reason to study (it is for business purposes, or for more general purposes, for instance.) More often than not, I presume, the teacher will have to supplement or replace the coursebooks with materials of her own, which is both challenging and very rewarding.
