The two receptive types of learning a language are reading and listening. These can be broken down further into the two types: reading and listening for a specific purpose; and reading or listening for entertainment.
Reading tends to be easier for students because they can take their time with the words in front of them whereas listening is more difficult because people speak quickly and then the words are over. Despite this, listening and reading are equally important to the receptive stage or learning a new language.
