Unit fourteen deals with course books and lesson material. Materials can be broken into two groups: Authentic materials, such as newspapers, magazines and videos, and created materials, such as fill in the gap activities, crosswords and word searches. The benefits of using authentic material are increased relevancy, thereby potentially improving student motivation to learn, and in turn increasing student confidence once the student understands them. An advantage of using created material is that can be tailored to fit the age and competency of the students. Finally, course books are discussed, including their advantages & disadvantages, ways in which to optimise course book usage, and ways in which to go about evaluating a course book.
