One of the most important aspects of language that is often underestimated is writing. I remember when I lived in China that the problem of illiteracy plagued me from day one. How can you get about and understand choices to make if you cannot even read or identify those choices? Writing is often more intense, and gives teachers pause. However, if we are to effectively prepare students under our charge for the real world, we must incorporate this element. A balanced approach allows students to identify and then write many of the words they are learning to speak. Especially if writing those words are important for practical purposes (think signatures and dates) students should have a firm grasp of those concepts and be able to do them with ease.
