I personally found this unit very challenging, especially the translation of phonetic script. While I don't believe I will be using phonetic script as intensively as this unit, I will need a spend much more time reviewing this unit and taking advantage of the recommend supplementary texts to feel more comfortable with this topic. The use of the Phonetic Symbols is very useful in identifying sounds, especially when identifying them from a dictionary or other translation resource. However, it is my opinion, based upon my own learning of English, and other languages, that once basic phonetic sounds are learned (through drilling or exposure) students will reply more on their experience to correctly articulate word, rather than the phonetic symbols.
