Listening and reading skills are both important skills for a language learner. Usually there are two main reasons why people read or listen: for purpose or for entertainment.
There are certain skills associated with listening and reading, such as: predictive skills (eliciting full information from a headline or a small piece of information), scanning (looking for information we need), skimming (getting a general idea from the text), obtaining detailed information and deduction from context (deduce a text to a certain message).
To develop listening and reading skills the teacher should choose material carefully, regarding interests of the students, or having a way to build it up, use appropriate tasks to ensure comprehension, and pre-teach some important vocabulary (which influences understanding).
