Reading and listening skills are essential when learning a language, and this unit shows how we read and listen differently depending on our purpose or the subject matter. It makes sense that people learn (read and listen) better when they are interested in the topic. I am learning Korean right now, and my mind is actively engaged with reading and listening to the language through social media outlets and the Korean entertainment industry. I have learned more using those receptive skills than I have by using any of my textbooks or filling out worksheets. It makes me want to be more creative when writing lesson plans to include reading and listening activities, so that my students will be as engaged as I am, and enjoy learning new vocabulary and grammar structures.
