This course has certainly taught me the importance of taking teaching seriously and the amount of work that it requires to do so. I have learned a lot about lesson planning and the strategies that can be used to form a good lesson. To be a good teacher, one must put forth a lot of energy and work - it doesn’t “just happen.” the lesson planning lessons have given me a confidence in my ability to plan and teach a lesson.
This course has also reminded me of how much we take our language for granted. Many of the grammar lessons were more difficult than I had thought - not because I didn’t understand, but because I realized how difficult it is to put our language into terms simple enough that others could understand. They weren’t necessarily difficult to do; they were difficult to explain. Often times it just “sounds right” to us, so we use it. We really don’t know why it sounds right. This course forced me to take a look at language and really understand why/how it works.
I will be using this certificate to teach english in Taiwan this coming fall. The age group of the students is not certain yet, but is going to be either elementary or Jr. high. I will certainly use the material and knowledge gained from this course to enhance my teaching there. Because of this course I will focus more on student to student interaction in my lessons. I would have never made that a focus before taking this course.
