This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
As I went through the process of completing this certificate, people kept inquiring as to why it was taking so long to learn how to teach english. They kept saying that since I knew how to speak it already there can’t be that much to learn about passing it on to others; well, I don’t think they’ll understand how ridiculous those statements are until they take a course like this one. While the material itself wasn’t impossible, there is so much to learn. Growing up in an english household I wasn’t aware of how fortunate I was to be learning a language both my parents spoke but to also be submerged in it culturally. Learning grammar as I aged wasn’t always the easiest, but english has so many odds and ends that I couldn’t imagine perfecting it as a student learning in another country or only in a classroom setting. This course has made me more aware of how difficult of a language english is to conquer. I have many international friends who speak english as a second language that most people aren’t aware of the intense schooling they went through as a child and teenager. I have come to appreciate what foreign language learners go through and how fortunate I am to speak the language so many desire to learn. My university degree was focused on developing countries; I learned all about their history and current political, economic and social situations. I chose this path to be next in my life because it gave me an opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives who truly desire it. In many situations, outsiders come in to implement what they believe is best for the locals in the country they travel to, but I don’t want to be an unwelcomed visitor. There are students of all ages who truly desire to learn the english language for all different reasons. I am not sure where I will go to teach, and to be honest I’ve had some difficulty seeking out some options, but I know that I will be a nurturing and understanding teacher who will practice patience every single day and support my students through the challenge of learning english.
